Quien lea Niebla y café probablemente conozca el contexto en que esta novela ocurre y sepa de quiénes se habla en ella; los nombres han sido modificados pero resulta fácil adivinar la identidad de los personajes. En ésta, el punto de vista femenino –si es que eso existe– es clave para su comprensión, tanto como conocer el entorno en el que sucede, Xalapa y la Ciudad de México de los años sesenta del pasado siglo; así como los actores: la oligarquía provinciana que puede ser de muchas ciudades, no sólo de México y que aún persiste, desafortunadamente.La crítica social es evidente y da un punto de vista fresco y original, sobre todo al desenmarañar los nombres y saber que casi todas son personas reales, no personajes de ficción.La facultad de hacer figurar muchas ideas, sentimientos, pensamientos y escenas en pocas páginas no es fácil ni común; la autora la tenía y aquí lo demuestra, al igual que su capacidad para recrear minuciosamente sitios y momentos.

Overview

Pietro es un joven de familia acomodada que vive en la Roma de mediados del siglo XVIII. Debido a sus inclinaciones personales y a la educación que recibe, se obsesiona con la grandeza del antiguo Imperio Romano y decide dedicar su vida a devolverle a Roma el esplendor perdido. Sin embargo, esta tarea parece irrealizable hasta que un mago vetón se asienta en las proximidades de la ciudad y le promete ayuda para reconstruir el imperio a cambio de superar un juego sin reglas del que solo saldrá vencedor si es capaz de comprender el mundo.

La aceptación de las condiciones impuestas por el celta vetón llevan al protagonista a vivir cuatro vidas, cada una de ellas en el seno de una religión distinta (budismo, confucianismo, cristianismo e islam). Y tras encontrar las preguntas que el sabio le exige para superar el juego, Pietro recibe de él una singular esfera que, debidamente manipulada, podría dar lugar el advenimiento de los tiempos gloriosos. ¿Será Pietro capaz de seguir las instrucciones del celta para conquistar de nuevo el mundo? ¿Llegará a ver su imperio reconstruido o es un acontecimiento que verán las próximas generaciones?
